This Remote Base Fishing Trip is one of our peak weeks for Silvers on the Tal, again with a side order of rainbows and grayling. The trip is a 5 day 4 night trip based at either the mouth of the Tal or at our Skwentna River Camp. We alternate between a gravel bar on the Tal or our semi-permanent tent camp on the Skwentna River, about 3 miles down river. The set up on the gravel bar is the same comfortable set up as with the float trips - cots, 2 anglers per 6 person tent, and great riverside meals. The Skwentna Camp is more comfortable and spacious with great meals and a hot shower. From the Skwentna Camp we boat up to the mouth of the Tal each day starting at 6:00 AM and returning at 6:00 PM for the evening meal.
While we fish a 3 mile section of the river, right at the mouth is the most productive. As the salmon come into the clear water of the Tal after a 100 mile trip up the thick and blinding silt water of the glacial rivers, they can see again and all of what you send their way is new to them. Even though they are not feeding, they still have that "bite" instinct, which equates to more hook-ups for you.
What can you expect as far as:
Remoteness: Our base trips provide access to the remote Talachulitna River. This is a popular sport fishery in Southcentral Alaska and you will see other anglers, remember: No such thing as a "secret fishing hole". An average day will have 4-6 other anglers at the mouth. There are 2 lodges about a mile up river from the mouth. You get to fish the same water that their guests fish at about 1/2 the cost. Of course we don't have a jacuzzi. Wait, come to think of it, niether do they!
Fish: The Silvers are by far the most exciting freshwater game fish! A rainbow on steroids is about all that I can say of their acrobatics. Talk about action! Nothing compares to the zipping off of line with the sudden stop, jerk and airborne flips then the racing speed back at you while you try to take in line as fast as you can. And this the average Silver! While we don't like to state number of hook ups as it depends on too many factors, peak weeks for silvers will sometimes yield 30 hookups a day. With clear water, sight fishing for the Silvers with wogs is at its best. Rainbows will start to pick up with some of the bigger bows coming back during this time.
