This Remote Base Fishing Trip is for the angler looking for Sockeye, Chum, or Pink salmon on the Tal with a side order of rainbows and grayling. The trip is a 5 day 4 night trip base at either the mouth of the Tal or at our Skwentna River Camp. We alternate between a gravel bar on the Tal or our semi-permanent tent camp on the Skwentna River, about 3 miles down river. The set up on the gravel bar is the same comfortable set up as with the float trips - cots, 2 anglers per 6 person tent, and great riverside meals. The Skwentna Camp is more comfortable and spacious with great meals and a hot shower. From the Skwentna Camp we boat up to the mouth of the Tal each day starting at 6:00 AM and returning at 6:00 PM for the evening meal.
While we fish a 3 mile section of the river, right at the mouth is the most productive. As the salmon come into the clear water of the Tal after a 100 mile trip up the thick and blinding silt water of the glacial rivers, they can see again and all of what you send their way is new to them. Even though they are not feeding, they still have that "bite" instinct, which equates to more hook-ups for you.
What can you expect as far as:
Remoteness: Our base trips provide access to the remote Talachulitna River. This is a popular sport fishery in Southcentral Alaska and you will see other anglers, remember: No such thing as a "secret fishing hole". An average day will have 4-6 other anglers at the mouth. There are 2 lodges about a mile up river from the mouth. You get to fish the same water that their guests fish at about 1/2 the cost. Of course we don't have a jacuzzi. Wait, come to think of it, niether do they!
Fish: All 3 of these salmon are generally in the river together with the pinks being the heaviest numbers. Early Silvers may have arrived and along with the left over Kings this could be your chance for the Alaska Grand Slam, all 5 salmon. All will take your wares with the Sockeye being the most challenging. The more sparse the pattern the better for these skittish fish. Chums are great fun and provide quite the photo op with all of their odd markings. Pinks fight like most other fish, with the exception of the Silvers, and there are usually enough numbers to ensure many, many hook ups. Rainbows will be fair but usually the smaller ones during this time.
