Guided Wilderness Float and Remote Base Fishing Trips

Alaskan Style Adventure...

Interested in an exciting and memorable float or remote base fishing trip into the Alaskan wilderness filled with fishing and nature? Join us on one of our guided float or remote base fishing trips on the Talachulitna River at a price you'll like as much as the adventure. From a year round background living in the bush for 10 years with the Talachulitna River as our backyard, we have the gear and knowledge to make your Alaskan dream come true.

Picture yourself holding this! The Talachulitna River, located just off the remote Iditarod Trail, offers some of nature's most pristine and remote wilderness as well as some of Alaska's best fishing - this river is one of south central Alaska's most productive sport fisheries offering native rainbows, arctic grayling, dolly varden and all five species of Pacific salmon. So whether you're looking for a remote Alaska wilderness adventure with lots of fish or want a remote Alaska fishing trip filled with lots of adventure you'll not find a better trip in Alaska nor one at this price.

Our guides are skilled anglers in both fly and spin as well as skilled rafters. We know and provide the flies and spinners you need to catch the fish you're after. Our riverside camps are very comfortable with generous space in the tents, 2 people in a 6 person tent, cots, sleeping bags, and great meals. All in a great wilderness setting that only Alaska can provide.

Fly or spin fish the Talachulitna River.Fishing Flies or Spinners?
Whether you're fishing flies or spinners, we'll help you get the fish you're looking for. We provide all flies and/or lures - a $90 to $120 savings per angler in flies alone on the average trip. If your group is strictly interested in fly fishing Alaska bring your light rod (4-6 weight) for grayling and rainbows and a good heavy rod (7-10) for salmon. If a king is on your list, bring a good 10 weight rod. We'll provide all the flies but by all means bring your local fly shop's suggestions. For you spin anglers, bring rainbow rods in the 1/4 oz. range, salmon in the 1/2 oz. range, and for kings you'll need a 7/8 oz. rod, all with matching reels and plenty of line.

Rainbows are rainbows and if you've fished them elsewhere you'll be right at home here. Salmon are a bit different and we have the bright gaudy patterns that will annoy them. We tie our own flies and will have material on the fishing trip to tie more. On the Talachulitna it is only catch and release for rainbows and that's why the fish are so tough. We practice catch and release for not only rainbows but grayling as well as the dollies. We care for the fish as if our life depends on it... And it does! While the salmon limits are generous, you'll only be able to keep your limit on the last day as there is no way to preserve them for you.

Choose from Two Trips:
We offer 2 types of remote fishing trips on the Talachulitna River: Float Fishing (June - Mid July) or Remote Base Fishing Trips (Late July - August).

Float Fishing (June - Mid July): To get the adventure of a float trip with the fishing experience pick our 5 day Float Fishing Trip dowm the Talachulitna: On this trip there is a ton of fishing and floating during the course of the 5 days - we fish while we float. Need a longer trip and just for rainbows? Try our 7 day Rainbow float trip. See the quick overview below for more details.

Remote Base Fishing (Late July - August): Want a less strenuous fishing trip? Then you need to try our Remote Base Fishing Trip at our Skwentna River Camp located along the remote Iditarod Trail. On this trip you'll fish the river 12 hours a day wading up to 3 miles of the river's mouth. The remote base fishing trip is based at our Skwentna Camp near the mouth of the Talachulitna River where the fish are pouring in. See the quick overview below for more details.

Quick Overviews

A Float Fishing Trip Quick Overview: From about June 18th through July 24th we start our scenic wilderness float fishing trips at the Tal's midpoint. Shortly after our put-in, we'll head down through Hell's Gate followed by class I until the next canyon. Fishing for Kings.Class II to III canyons with some standing waves, a few rocks and easy boulders provide an adventure-filled trip through this wilderness. Unlike other streams with more whitewater than fishing holes, the Talachulitna provides almost continuous fishing mixed with adventure. With class I water in between the canyons, wildlife and fish abound. We spend our time fishing on these trips with early morning and late evenings bringing the hits. With our almost endless sunlight during the summer, late night fishing is the norm. You'll enjoy nature and this wilderness float from a comfortable 16' cataraft (designed to fish from), camping each night on a gravel bar and enjoying our fine river dining all on one of Alaska's finest rivers. Our riverside camps are very comfortable with generous space in the tents; 2 people in a 6 person tent, cots, sleeping bags, and great meals.

Fishing on a float trip is a great way to fish Alaska and on the Talachulitna you'll enjoy catching Rainbow Trout, Salmon and Grayling right from our catarafts with fishing platforms and lean bars. This trip is a slow, non-rushed trip. You won't be hurried to get to the next stop. In fact, when the fish are hitting that's where we'll be, right in the water with them.

When we reach the confluence with the swift, glacial Skwentna River you'll get a last chance to fish while we prepare for the pickup by the bush plane. You'll travel with only 2 guests and one guide per raft getting top service with this ratio and, with the guide as the oarsman, you can sit back and enjoy the river and fish.

Need a 7 day float fishing trip on the Talachulitna to target the fat rainbows of mid summer? Try our Rainbow Float where we cover the entire river from the head waters at Judd Lake to the confluence with the Skwentna River. We will be targeting the native rainbows that are in search of the kings' eggs. This trip is 7 days and 6 nights with all of the standard amenities of our guided trips. The water level will be lower than early season floats and require more wading. However, most of us prefer to wade fish anyway, so with the rafts bringing up the rear with the gear what a more perfect way to target some fat rainbows and see the wilderness of Alaska! See our prices below for booking details of this 7 day float fishing trip on the Tal.

A Remote Base Fishing Trip Quick Overview: During late July and all of August we start our wilderness remote base fishing trips with a chartered bush flight and boat transfer to the mouth of the Talachulitna. Upon our arrival at the Talachulitna, we'll rig up and start fishing! Depending on the fish you're targeting, we'll move either up river or fish right at the mouth. Our remote base camp is operated from our Skwentna River Camp, about 3 miles down river and along the Iditarod Trail in a very remote and quiet setting. A very comfortable safari style set up - cots, 2 anglers per 6 person wall tent, a large dining wall tent and great meals make this a unique location. We boat up to the mouth of the Talachulitna each day starting at 5:45 AM for the 15 minute and return at 6:00 PM for the evening meal.Fishing for Silvers.

On the Talachulitna we fish a 3 mile section of the river from the mouth up to the first canyon. This stretch is loaded with great riffles and holes just right for rainbows, grayling, dollies and all 5 Pacific salmon. Want to sight fish to huge salmon? We have the spots where you can pick out an individual fish, cast to it, watch it track your fly or spinner and then take it! Nothing's more fun in the fishing world and we have the flies and top wogs to get the most enjoyment from sight fishing. Each day is filled with morning salmon fishing and afternoon "bow hunting" for rainbows as well as grayling and dollies. Snacks and lunch are served on the water where you're fishing, not back at camp, so you'll get the most fishing each day. This trip is great for those looking for maximum fishing time and those looking for a less strenuous trip than the float fishing trip.

When's the best time to schedule a Remote Base Fishing Trip? Looking for Sockeye, Chums and Pinks? Try the last week in July or the first week in August. August is the month of the Silvers with the 15th being the normal peak week.

Bring your clothes, waders, rods and reels for a great Alaska fishing trip. For King salmon you'll need a stout rig. Bring your best light and heavy setups for Rainbows to Salmon.

A welcomed crowd on the Talachulitna River. Larger parties than 4 are always welcomed. Your group is our sole concern during these special wilderness trips.

The Talachulitna also offers outstanding photographic opportunities of landscapes, an old Iditarod Trail outpost, wildlife and wildflowers as well as the memorable shots you'll want of the great fishing so don't forget your camera gear.
